Lots of ripe lemon peel and zest on the nose, together with a bed of well-placed, wet and dry minerals. Hints of wild local herbs too, such as oregano. Medium-to full-bodied but tight, with a compact flavor profile. Absolutely delicious. Best ever. Long and lightly phenolic at the end, suggesting that this will cellar for a little. But why wait?
Fiano is one of the most important vines in Campania and in Irpinia, in particular, it produces some of the most complex white wines in the region, and perhaps in Italy. Complexity, after all, is the distinguishing feature of this vine, which lends itself well both to being made into wine on its own, as in this case, and to blends with other local vines, such as Greco. For its Campanaro, Feudi di San Gregorio foresees, after vinification, a permanence in oak Tonneau for about 6 months. The result is an interesting white wine characterized by an intense straw yellow colour, bright and warm. The bouquet is ample, with tones of ripe pear and grapefruit followed by mint and honey. Then floral nuances of broom and hawthorn. In the mouth, on the other hand, it is appreciated for its fine, fresh acidity, due in large part to the mineral content of the soil. It is a very pleasant white wine, perfect for more than one occasion, ideal with grilled fish but also with meat dishes. Try it, for example, with a simple rabbit cacciatore.
There is a subtle fil-rouge that unites everything that has been done at Feudi di San Gregorio since its inception in 1986. It is the desire to make the most of the inestimable heritage of indigenous grape varieties in the Campania tradition. Starting with Greco, Fiano and Aglianico, the true regional flagships. Today the company can count on a total of 300 hectares of vineyards, divided into more than 800 plots that differ in altitude, exposure and slope. A marvellous natural jigsaw puzzle that perfectly expresses the biodiversity of the territory, and is capable of giving life to extraordinary cru. It is currently one of the leading wineries in Southern Italy, with exports covering more than 50 countries worldwide. The experience gained over the years has therefore led the Capaldo family, who have always been the mind and soul of the company, to decide to explore the winemaking potential of other regions of Italy. This led to the creation of the "Tenute Capaldo" project, a group of wineries ranging from DUBL, also in Campania, to Campo alle Comete in Tuscany, Basilisco, an organic winery in Vulture, Ognissole, a biodynamic winery in Puglia, Sirch, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, and FedeGraziani, a small jewel on the slopes of Etna. All these wineries share the same values: producing excellent quality wines while respecting their territory.
