CHAMPAGNE DEUTZ S.A.16 RUE JEANSON 51160 AY - France
The Champagne Rosé Brut from the house of Deutz is a homage to the Pinot Noir. A sparkling wine of great class, characterised by elegance and refinement, but also by delicacy and grace. An all-round pleasant wine. It comes from a blend of grapes from different areas of Champagne. After all, Maison Deutz, located in the municipality of Ay, is now part of Maison Louis Roederer and has 42 hectares of vineyards in the best sites of the region. The Pinot Noir comes from Premier and Grand Cru sites, with a touch of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs plots mixed in. The delicate colour comes from the assemblage technique, in which part of the red wine is added to the base wine before bottling and foaming. Maturation on the lees lasts about 36 months. In the glass, it has a delicately bright pink colour, enhanced by a fine and persistent perlage. On the nose, it is delicate and elegant. Fruity notes of currants, raspberries and citrus fruits with hints of grapefruit. Then traces of vanilla and almonds. The whole is carried by an elegant mineral vein, which is also confirmed on the palate. In the mouth, it is firm and precise. Spiciness and softness are perfectly balanced. A champagne with a strong gastronomic character that is difficult (if not impossible) to surpass. It is perfect as an aperitif and combines effortlessly with fish or meat dishes. Excellent with seared tuna and Catalan-style lobster.
Fascinating as always, the story of Maison Deutz began in 1838, and we are in Ay, one of the most characteristic villages in Champagne. William Deutz and Pierre Geldermann, who came from Aquisgarana in Germany, settled here with the declared aim of producing great wines (and they should), starting with particularly suitable vineyards. Therefore, they bought a first parcel of land in the same year and started growing grapes, which they vinified in their cellar. William Deutz, an expert in cultivation and vinification, had already gained experience at Bollinger. Pierre Geldermann, on the other hand, took care of the financial and commercial matters of the house. Over the years, Maison Deutz expanded its activities and acquired new vineyards around Ay and on the Côte des Blancs. Today, about 600,000 bottles are produced annually, either from its own vineyards or by buying grapes from experienced local winegrowers who can guarantee the impeccable quality of their products. Maison Deutz sold part of its capital, about 60 %, to Louis Roederer, who ensured extensive new investments and a thorough renovation of the cellar, which is now equipped with state-of-the-art technology. For the delicate phase of maturation, however, the wines are still stored in the beautiful cellar, which is up to 60 metres deep underground.
