It's hard to imagine making a rich California Chardonnay more intriguing. This can only be achieved, perhaps, by adding a hint of aromaticity that Chardonnay lacks. At Wente Vineyards, Sunshine State, they thought they'd give it a try by adding just a hint of Gewürztraminer to their "Morning Fog" Chardonnay, which often covers the San Francisco Bay and the vineyards that surround it. Part of Fog is aged in French barriques, with monthly batonnage to keep the fine lees in suspension and give the finished wine greater plumpness. The result is a wine marked by a straw yellow color of beautiful intensity, with a wide range of aromas ranging from very ripe fruit to butter and toasted hazelnuts. In the mouth it is pleasantly crisp, with a good balance of all its components. Enveloping structure and balanced acidity.
