    Chardonnay Venezia Giulia IGT 2023
  • Chardonnay is certainly not an unknown grape variety. But, however well known it may be to everyone, it is difficult to give a precise and unambiguous picture of it. Because if the base is always the same, the environment where it is grown, its climate and soil, as well as the technique with which it is vinified, can give rise to extremely different wines. A master of versatility, one might say. In this case, Jermann harvests his Chardonnay in early September, when the aromatic ripening is complete but the grapes still have a nice natural acidity. Super-traditional vinification in the cellar, the wine is then left to mature on the lees, in steel tanks, for about six months and a few months in the bottle. In the glass, one thus discovers a wine characterised by a beautiful bright straw colour with greenish highlights, an intense, fruity and slightly aromatic bouquet. The same pleasant sensation of richness and softness also characterises the taste. In the mouth, in fact, the natural aromas of the vine are enhanced even more. Good today, this Friulian white is perfectly capable of waiting a few years in the cellar, waiting for the right occasion. Perfect as an aperitif, on the table it goes well with fish, shellfish and vegetable creams.

We are in one of the most beautiful wine-growing areas in Italy, if not the world. This is where the Jermann winery is located. We are in the heart of Collio, the north-eastern border with Slovenia. Here the territory is characterised by a mild climate, thanks to the proximity of the Adriatic Sea, and by a unique soil, the ponca, a calcareous and clayey soil that gives the wines a high level of minerality. The history of the Jermann winery began in 1881, when Angelo, great-grandfather of the current owner Silvio, planted the first vineyards in Ruttars, a hamlet of Dolegna del Collio. In the following years the company expanded and began to produce quality wines, establishing itself as one of the most important realities of Collio. Today Jermann covers an area of about 200 hectares, of which 170 are vineyards and 20 are arable land. The vineyards are located in various areas of Collio, including Ruttars, Villanova, Lonzano and San Floriano. The vines cultivated are those typical of the area, such as Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling Renano, Friulano, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Still a family business, Jermann has made quality and sustainability its founding values. In fact, the winery is committed to a sustainable viticulture project, which involves the use of innovative techniques for vineyard management and the application of circular economy principles.
