Castello Vicchiomaggio Via Vicchiomaggio, 4 - Greve in Chianti (SI)
A wine of great elegance and complexity, this Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG is dedicated to Agostino Petri, the historic owner of Castello Vicchiomaggio. It is the result of excellent viticulture and careful vinification. The grapes come from a single vineyard located in the heart of Chianti Classico, in Greve in Chianti. A terroir characterised by limestone-clay soils and a temperate Mediterranean climate, which lend great complexity to the grapes. In this case, Sangiovese, a native of Chianti, is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a perfect balance of fruity and spicy flavours. After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in small temperature-controlled steel tanks, with maceration on the skins for at least 15 days. Maturation of about 18 months in barriques - second passage - and large casks follows. Then, after bottling, the wine rests in the bottle for at least another 4 months. Ruby red in colour with garnet hues, the nose reveals a broad and complex bouquet, with evolved fruity notes of cherry, plum and jam, hints of sweet spices, chocolate and vanilla. In the mouth, however, it is above all warm and enveloping, with soft, well-integrated tannins. Lively acidity and an aromatic persistence of great intensity complete the picture. Structure and complexity make this Chianti Classico ideal as an accompaniment to main courses of red meat, game and mature cheeses.
The origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio, initially named Vicchio dei Longobardi, date back to around 1400, as recorded on some ancient parchments still preserved today. We are on top of a hill that dominates the entire Greve Valley, about 18 kilometres from Florence. In its long and glorious history, many personalities have stayed at the Vicchiomaggio Castle, most notably Leonardo da Vinci, at the time when he painted his most famous masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Today, John and Paola Matta are the owners of the castle. The estate covers about 140 hectares, of which 34 are planted with vines, 10 with olive trees, and the remainder is parkland. Sangiovese is the estate's most representative grape variety, a fundamental grape for the production of Chianti Classico. With it, however, Castello Vicchiomaggio also has other international grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties, in particular, are used for the production of IGT red wines. Mediterranean climate and typical soil rich in clay and large stones, the so-called Galestro, are the basic elements of the Castello's terroir.
