SPERI VITICOLTORI Via Fontana, 14, 37029 San Pietro In Cariano (VR)
This is packed tight with a concentrated, silky bead of ripe red berries and red cherries that drives through the palate, until fine, quite firm tannins block its path right at the end. Medium-bodied, but the concentration of fruit makes it feel heavier. Lots of energy here, but balance, too. Delicious now. Even better after another year in bottle. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
For lovers of 'non-extreme' withering, Ripasso is undoubtedly an excellent choice. A younger brother of the lord of Valpolicella, the noble Amarone, this wine, in Speri's version, comes from the company's own vineyards, located in Valpolicella Classica. We are located between 120 and 350 metres above sea level, specifically in the municipalities of San Pietro in Cariano, Fumane and Negrar. In this case, the basic blend is composed of Corvina Veronese for 70%, Rondinella for 20% and Molinara, with other indigenous varieties, for the remaining 10%. After harvesting, which is done manually, the grapes are taken to the cellar for immediate crushing, followed by maceration at a controlled temperature. Then, at the beginning of March, this Valpolicella Classico wine is macerated on the marc of Amarone. This is followed by 12 months of maturation in 20-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and a further 6 months of bottle ageing. Intense red, on the nose this Ripasso presents very clear scents of red fruit, spices and cocoa. In the mouth it is warm and soft, well balanced by round tannins. An extremely versatile wine, it is ideal with meat and cheese dishes.
When one thinks of the Speri family, there are always two fundamental points. Tradition, strong indeed. And innovation, fearless. As a historic family of Valpolicella, Speri is a faithful interpreter of the most prestigious wine of its land, Amarone. A bond so deep that over the years it has made Speri an authoritative point of reference in oenology. But if this is something that is known to everyone, what may not be as well known is that the Veronese company is one that, even in times long past, has made safeguarding the environment one of its strong points. Today it is the one with the largest extension of hectares under organic cultivation, within the Classic zone. So tradition... with an eye to the future.
