This is a small oenological gem. Petite Sirah, in fact, is a grape variety that has now all but disappeared from the Old World, although it originated in the south of France. It is a natural cross between Peloursin, a native of the Rhone region, and Syrah, found in the same area. The diminutive "Petite" refers to the size of its intensely colored berries. It is also sometimes referred to as Durif, in memory of its discoverer, Dr. François Durif, who published its characteristics around 1880. It is a very interesting grape variety, especially suited to hot and dry climates. And that is why it should come as no surprise that L.A. Cetto offers it in its range in a special version matured in French oak barrels for about 6 months. Intense and impenetrable color, the nose reveals distinct aromas of fresh red fruits and floral hints, especially hibiscus. In the mouth it is well-structured, pleasantly tannic and decidedly persistent.
Mexican by fact, Italian by distant origin. The L.A. Cetto Winery, in fact, was founded in 1928 thanks to Angelo Cetto from Trentino. Originally from Selva di Levico, Trento, he moved to Mexico with his family in the mid-1920s. Here he acquires a winery in Tijuana, a stone's throw from the border. It is the Prohibition era, and thanks to this fortunate location, the Cetto family's business gets off on the right foot. With the arrival of Luis Augustin, Angelo's son, the winery expanded considerably, acquiring new vineyards and beginning to cultivate different grape varieties, mainly Italian, such as Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Barbera, joined by Zinfandel, a relative of the Apulian Primitivo. Success was not long in coming, and within a few years the company began to expand its business, exporting its wines even to California.
