Appreciated for producing fresh, aromatic and mineral wines, Vermentino is at home in Liguria. Here, the cultivation of this grape has ancient roots and has evolved over time, adapting to the region's characteristic Mediterranean climate and soil. The Vermentino vines in Liguria extend, for the most part, on the hills overlooking the sea, benefiting from a combination of sea breezes and a mild climate that contributes to the optimal ripening of the grapes. The one proposed here, 100% Vermentino, is a Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC. It is produced by Durin, a small company that harvests its best Vermentino in its vineyards in Ortovero, Garlenda, 'Ponterotto' and Ranzo, in the province of Imperia. A dry white wine, it has a beautiful pale straw yellow colour in the glass. Its nose is delicate, fresh and subtle. Its bouquet is characteristic, with hints of herbs and wild flowers, honey, resins and citrus fruits. In the mouth it is dry but delicately soft, savoury and fresh. A discreetly structured white, it enjoys an intriguing bitterish finish. Perfect to accompany a wide range of dishes, it marries beautifully with seafood and vegetable hors d'oeuvres. Lasagne and trofie with pesto, risotto with squid ink, boiled, baked or salted fish.
Durin is a small family-run farm with a long history. It is located in Ortovero, in the province of Savona and was founded in 1978 by Antonio Basso, the third generation of winegrowers in his family. The company's first vineyards date back to the 1920s and today extend over 17 hectares, mostly terraced, in the Arroscia Valley. The main native varieties of western Liguria are grown here, thanks to a very special microclimate, influenced by the hills and the sea just 7 kilometres away. In the cellar, tradition and innovation happily coexist. So alongside the traditional Ligurian wines there are some very special and interesting ones.
