One never stops learning when it comes to wine. In this case, for example, we are faced with a true rarity. A Ligurian white produced with Lumassina grapes from the Durin vineyards in Orco Feglino, Vezzi Portio, Spotorno and Rialto. The name Lumassina, in Ligurian dialect, means snail. Tradition has it that the wine made from this grape should be drunk with a dish of snails, which in the area are called 'lumasse'. Traditions aside, the one proposed here by Durin is a pleasantly dry white wine, characterised by a pale straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights. The nose is delicately floral and vegetal, with hints of musk and yellow plum. In the mouth it is fresh, with a slightly pleasantly tart note. Light in body, it has great balance.
Durin is a small family-run farm with a long history. It is located in Ortovero, in the province of Savona and was founded in 1978 by Antonio Basso, the third generation of winegrowers in his family. The company's first vineyards date back to the 1920s and today extend over 17 hectares, mostly terraced, in the Arroscia Valley. The main native varieties of western Liguria are grown here, thanks to a very special microclimate, influenced by the hills and the sea just 7 kilometres away. In the cellar, tradition and innovation happily coexist. So alongside the traditional Ligurian wines there are some very special and interesting ones.
