With a bottle like that, it is impossible not to notice. But the best part comes later, when you have the chance to taste it. Because what you discover is a wine of Tuscan tradition. A Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC Riserva, the result of a long and careful processing of typical grapes, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia del Chianti, harvested by hand and laid out to dry on straw mats, protected from humidity and mould. Vinification is slow and culminates in a very long maturation period of at least 48 months in small oak barrels. It takes much, much patience. But one is amply repaid from the very first taste, when one discovers a nectar characterised by a golden yellow colour with amber highlights. On the nose, the aromas are harmonious and appropriately intense, with a hint of bitter almond and dried fruit. The taste, on the other hand, is warm, harmonious and enveloping. Served chilled, around 12 degrees, few people know it, but Vin Santo can also be served as an aperitif. At slightly higher temperatures, around 18 degrees, however, it is suitable as a dessert wine. No harm done to the purists... But with a nice almond cantuccio, this Vin Santo really goes down well. Also try it with a spicy cheese board.
There is no area more fascinating and full of history and tradition than Chianti. And a piece of this history is linked to the name Castelli del Grevepesa. We are in San Casciano Val di Pesa, some fifteen kilometres from Florence, right at the gateway to Chianti Classico. Here, in 1965, a group of 18 winegrowers gave life to a new reality. They were united by a single dream, that of keeping intact the centuries-old traditions of Tuscan viticulture, territory and farming customs. To do this, they immediately set their sights on the production of high quality wines, in compliance with the strict standards of the Black Rooster Consortium. Since then, a lot of wine has passed through the jars of the cellar, which over the years has grown to its current capacity of about 120 member companies, with vineyards mainly in the municipalities of Greve in Chianti, San Casciano Val di Pesa (Mercatale Val di Pesa), Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Barberino Val d'Elsa. The range has clearly expanded and now includes wines from all the main regional denominations. From Chianti and Chianti Classico to Vernaccia, Nobile di Montepulciano and even includes a Maremma line, with Vermentino, Rosato and Morellino. But there is no shortage of goodies. Even if the size has changed, unchanged is the passion that is put into every day's work.
