The Bolgheri Rosso Poggio ai Ginepri comes from a dry and hot vintage. Thanks to the sea breezes that wash across the vineyards, there was no loss of acidity. This is an open and accessible wine without much heft. It offers light notes of black olive and black fruit. It was bottled at the end of August, and this is a great value.
Aromas of currants and hints of fresh herbs, such as basil, following through to a medium body, round tannins and currant and light dried -sage undertones in the aftertaste. Drinkable now, but better in 2021.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this opens with aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry and cooking spice. The straightforward round palate offers blackberry jam, vanilla and star anise alongside supple tannins. KERIN O’KEEFE
A solid showing of plum, licorice, leather and tobacco flavors marks this medium-bodied red, finishing with a light herbal note. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2027. 16,666 cases made, 4,166 cases imported. — BS
The most classic of cuts, with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and a hint, about 10% Petit Verdot. This is how Poggio ai Ginepri, Bolgheri DOC offered here by Tenuta Argentiera is born. The grapes come from the company's own vineyards and are brought to the winery when they are perfectly ripe. Each variety is processed separately, so that it can be followed and processed with the right care. After vinification, part of the mass is transferred into used French oak barriques, where malolactic conversion takes place and where it is then left to refine for a few months. The other part of the mass, however, remains in steel until bottling. The result is a young but intense red wine. A nice red, with good structure and great concentration. On the nose it is vast and deep, pleasantly fruity and with an intriguing spicy base. On the palate it is structured, soft and very clean.
The location is Bolgheri. In the heart of the Maremma and where millions of enthusiasts from all over the world come to taste some of the most famous Tuscan wines. We're not talking Chianti or Brunello. But of Supertuscan, that unique mix of Tuscan terroir, in this case close to the sea, and international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet. In this enchanted corner of Italy, between beaches and hills lies Tenuta Argentiera. The name comes from the ancient silver mines that were once found in this area, which is also rich in natural springs and healing waters. The Estate has two unique characteristics. It is the closest to the Tyrrhenian coast and, at the same time, also the one that reaches the highest altitude in the whole Bolgheri territory. Its vineyards rise up to about 200 meters above sea level, thus enjoying a very special and varied microclimate.
