Poderi e Cantine Oddero di Mariacristina Oddero e Mariavittoria Oddero s.s.a. Frazione Santa Maria, 28 12064 La Morra - Cuneo - Italia
For once, Piedmont is not synonymous with great red wines. But of surprising whites. We are talking about a Timorasso Derthona DOC, proposed here by Oddero. A real jewel of Piedmont, a white that surprises with its elegance and complexity. It is produced in the municipality of Monleale, in the province of Alessandria, in a unique terroir, characterised by limestone-clay soils and good exposure that favours the perfect ripening of the grapes. The Derthona area has always had a vocation for wine-growing and Timorasso, an indigenous grape variety that almost disappeared in the 1960s, has found its ideal habitat in this area, giving white wines of great personality, longevity and complexity. In this case, the vines used by Oddero are young, between 3 and 5 years old, already capable of yielding grapes rich in extracts. Harvesting is manual and allows careful selection of the ripest and healthiest bunches. Fermentation is spontaneous and takes place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, preserving the freshness and vivacity of the aromas. Malolactic fermentation follows, uncommon in white wines, which softens and gives the wine a more harmonious profile. Ageing takes place partly in large Austrian oak casks for 1 year, the remainder in steel tanks. Following the ageing period, the two masses are blended. Before being put on the market, the wine rests a further 4 months in the bottle. Straw yellow in colour with golden highlights, the nose seduces with a refined bouquet of white flowers, jasmine and acacia. Then citrus notes of lemon and cedar. With ageing, tertiary hints of honey, almond and dried fruit emerge, enhancing the aromatic complexity of the wine. In the mouth, Oddero's Timorasso Derthona surprises with its mineral freshness and elegant structure. The finish is long and satisfying, with echoes of dried fruit and honey.
The Oddero wine estate is an authentic natural terrace embracing the heart of Piedmontese oenology. Here, the vineyard is more than just a crop. It is rather a tradition, handed down from generation to generation. A family heritage that must be preserved and enhanced. The Oddero family vineyards are scattered on the slopes of the most prestigious hills. Here, in the best positions, or 'sorì' as they are known locally, the symbolic vines of the region ripen: the noble Nebbiolo, the beating heart of Barolo and Barbaresco, Moscato, and Barbera. "Poderi e Cantine Oddero" are a historic brand in the wine world. Today, the reins of the company are in the hands of Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, daughters of Giacomo Oddero, a legendary figure in the Piedmontese wine scene. The Oddero's oenological philosophy is a perfect fusion of tradition and innovation.
