Piedmont, land of great reds? Certainly... but not only. This is demonstrated by this Roero Arneis DOCG Nikki proposed by the Maccagno family winery. Typical of Piedmont, Roero Arneis is a wine that over the years has managed to carve out a slice of loyal fans who recognise its innate quality, given by the right mix of freshness, aromatic complexity and ability to express the character of its terroir. Roero Arneis is mainly produced from the Arneis grape, itself an indigenous Piedmontese variety, whose name means 'small, difficult', in reference to its reputation as a capricious vine. Managed with care, however, as in this case, Arneis is capable of producing wines characterised by intense aromas and high acidity. Vinified in steel, at the end of processing the wine matures on its lees, again in steel, for at least 8 months, before bottling and a further 6 months resting in the bottle. With its hints of fresh flowers and ripe fruit, this Piedmontese white wine is ideal as an aperitif or to accompany delicate white meat dishes, but also shellfish, medium-aged cheeses and even... strawberries (its producer's word!).
