CHARACTERISTICS

  • Location Piedmont
  • Grapes Arneis 100%
  • Sensations The colour is an intense straw yellow with greenish reflections. The bouquet is reminiscent of exotic fruits, ripe pears, hawthorn flowers and acacia honey. In the mouth it is pleasantly enveloping, soft, sweet with acidity that gives freshness and flavour to the aftertaste.
  • Vinification Vinification: the grapes are placed in small 20 kg crates with holes to facilitate aeration. It is immediately soft-pressed to avoid crushing the skins and the must obtained is stored in steel vats at a temperature of about 8/10°C to allow it to decant statically and then to separate the coarser parts. After about 24 hours, the must is racked off and brought to a temperature of 16/18°C; at this point, within a few hours, alcoholic fermentation is naturally initiated by indigenous yeasts. Once the fermentation is complete, the wine is decanted and stored at a temperature of 5/6 °C. Ageing: In stainless steel vats on its fine lees, which are periodically stirred in suspension until the following spring, after which the wine is bottled and after a couple of months released onto the market.

"Val di Tana" Roero Arneis DOCG 2022
  • It is called Val di Tana and is a Roero Arneis DOCG, offered here by the fine Piedmontese winery Fontanafredda. 100% Arneis grapes, this white is typical of the Roero hills, an area otherwise known for the quality of its red wines. Super-soft vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, this white wine is aged, again in stainless steel, in contact with its fine lees, until the spring following the harvest. At that point, the wine is bottled and, after a couple of months, is ready to drink. In the glass it has a beautiful intense straw yellow colour with greenish reflections. The nose reveals a rich and satisfying bouquet reminiscent of exotic fruits, ripe pear, hawthorn flowers and acacia honey. In the mouth, however, it is pleasantly enveloping. Delicately soft, it has a natural acidity that makes it fresh and savoury. Fantastic as an aperitif, at table it is perfect with fish starters, light first courses and risottos.

Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This inscription on Fontanafredda's website is enough to give a sense of a company that to call "historic" is almost reductive. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was in fact given by Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous "bella Rosina". Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a point of reference for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, many curious records belong to this winery. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866, and the first vinification took place in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines reached America, and in 1887, the first cement tanks in Europe were built. Finally, 1959 saw the production of the first classic method sparkling wine, the forerunner of Alta Langa DOCG. The last step in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, is in 2018. Since that year, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, Fontanafredda, which exports to over 60 countries around the world, can count on a complex of 120 hectares of vineyards. And in its cellars there are over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be put on the market. Long live... Fontanafredda!
