Maison Jacquesson is a very special reality on the Champagne scene. First of all, it was one of the first to decide to reduce its production in favour of quality. In fact, they are "the smallest of the maisons, or the largest of the vignerons", placing themselves perfectly between these two categories. The other particularity concerns the creation of wines which, although not vintage wines in the strict sense of the term, are Cuvées representing 'the best possible blend', vintage after vintage. The 744, for example, is made from wines from the 2016 harvest in clear predominance. Chardonnay (57%), Pinot Meunier (22%) and Pinot Noir (21%). On the back of the label you will find the precise percentage of each grape variety, but also the different ratio of vintage wine to reserve wine. The grapes come from vineyards partly in Dizy and partly in Avize and Ay. Straw yellow in colour with golden highlights, the 744 has a fine and extremely persistent perlage. The nose is intense and complex, with notes of candied fruit, citrus and brioche. In the mouth, however, it is round, soft and fresh. Pleasantly complex, it is a Champagne for those who do not like compromise. On the table it accompanies delicate fish dishes. A sushi evening with friends? With a bottle like this, it will taste completely different.
Jacquesson, a fine Champagne Maison, is based in Dizy, a few kilometres north of Epernay. We are in the heart of the most fascinating wine region in the world. Founded by Memmie Jacquesson back in 1798, the Maison was immediately a great success, so much so that in 1810 Emperor Napoleon awarded it the gold medal "pour la beauté et la richesse de ses caves", for the beauty and richness of its cellars. When his son Adolphe joined the company, Maison Jacquesson made an important leap in quality. On the one hand, in fact, the way of managing the vineyard was revolutionised, introducing a technique which, a few years later, was adopted globally. But the most important thing was the development of what is now almost a symbol of Champagne and wine with bubbles. It was Jacquesson, in fact, who developed and patented the 'cage' to hold the cork in Champagne bottles. After a series of ups and downs, in 1925 Maison Jacquesson was entrusted to the care of Leon de Tassigny, who saved it from probable bankruptcy. Today, the brothers Laurent and Jean-Hervé Chiquet are at the helm of the Maison. Their philosophy is to produce "the best possible wine" every year, one that best represents the vintage. This is why they do not use reserve wines in any of their Cuvées.
