Produced in the heart of Tuscany, in Castagneto Carducci (LI), the Bolgheri DOC Rosso Rute di Guado al Melo is the product of a unique territory. In Bolgheri the soil is alluvial, very deep and composed of sand, clay and pebbles. All this, combined with a maritime climate, creates ideal conditions for the cultivation of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It is no coincidence that Bolgheri DOC is one of the most prestigious denominations in Tuscany, recognised for the production of red wines of great character, from international grape varieties. This area is famous for its ‘Super Tuscans’, wines that have revolutionised the Italian wine world thanks to the use of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah vines. Each homogeneous micro-part of the vineyard is harvested and processed separately, using traditional methods and the utmost care to enhance the territorial characteristics of the selected grapes. The wine ages for about 12 months in used wood, in contact with its yeasts, which are stirred weekly. After clarification with a series of rackings but without filtration, the wine is aged in steel for 3-4 months and then in the bottle for at least 12 months. Ruby red colour with purple reflections, the nose offers an elegant bouquet of small red fruits, enriched with hints of blueberry, blackcurrant, tobacco and spices. In the mouth it is intense and soft, with a good structure and a harmonious and long finish. Perfect with meat dishes and flavoursome foods such as roasts, braised meats and mature cheeses.
Guado al Melo is a family-run winery in the hills of the Bolgheri DOC, run with passion and skill by the Scienza family, combining artisan methods with sustainability. The project began in 1998, when Annalisa and Michele, in their late twenties but with a solid background of personal and family experience, started their personal adventure. Today Guado al Melo covers 16.5 hectares of vineyards, rich in biodiversity. The winery, the result of a bio-architecture project, is completely underground. It houses an interesting museum on the history and culture of wine, as well as a large library, collected over a lifetime of work by Professor Attilio Scienza, Michele's father and a renowned expert in viticulture and author of an important zoning study conducted in the mid-90s to fully understand the complexity of Bolgheri's soils. An interesting fact: the name Guado al Melo, which is the ancient name of this place, refers to the ford on the Fossa di Bolgheri stream, the waterway that surrounds the company's vineyards and gives the soils their alluvial quality.
