"Casanova" Pinot Nero Collio DOC 2021
  • It is called Casanova and, like the famous Venetian adventurer, writer and seducer, famous for his extravagant life and numerous amorous conquests, this Pinot Nero Collio DOC is designed to be a real heartthrob. The grapes come from estate vineyards in Capriva del Friuli. Here, the Pinot Nero grapes ripen at the end of August, at which point the technicians at the Castello di Spessa winery carefully select the best bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation begins, in this case in truncated conical oak vats, with daily manual punching-down. This process continues for about 15-20 days, during which malolactic fermentation also takes place. The wine is then transferred to barriques and left to rest in the Castello di Spessa 'bunker' for at least 12 months. Bottled without filtration, it preserves all the integrity of the initial fruit. It is then further left to refine in the bottle for a few months before being put on sale. Intense ruby colour, as soon as it is poured it reveals a very typical aroma, with notes of small red fruits with pleasant spicy hints. In the mouth, however, it is velvety and elegant, with a long, ample finish of raspberry and warm spices. It is the right wine if an all-meat menu is planned on the table. Excellent, for example, with lamb, even grilled. It is also the right choice to accompany medium-aged cheeses and, served slightly cooler than the canonical 16/18 degrees, it also goes well with fish dishes.

The region is Friuli Venezia Giulia. The winery is that of Castello di Spessa. We are, let us be clear, in one of Italy's most prestigious wine-growing areas and one of the area's most qualitative wineries. The origins of the winery date back to the late 1970s, when Loretto Pali bought an estate of around 60 hectares in the Isonzo area. Then, in 1987, the property was further expanded with the acquisition of the Castle and a further 28 hectares of vineyards, this time in the Gorizia Collio, in Capriva del Friuli. All of Castello di Spessa's wines are produced from its own vineyards, where typical local grape varieties dominate with: Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are then aged in the medieval cellars and in the bunker, dug under the castle during World War II (and only discovered in 1987 during a renovation). Situated at a depth of about 18 metres, at a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, the bunker is the ideal place for ageing the estate's fine wines.
