Ruché is a grape variety with ancient origins. It is certainly one of Piedmont's most interesting and dynamic native grape varieties. Its name probably refers to an old farmhouse, called 'Rocca', where some monks vinified a sweet wine to give to the inhabitants of the nearby Poggio castle. Hence the origin of the term Ruchè. Cavaliere, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato, was born out of Sant'Agata's need to vinify separately the grapes produced by the more recent vineyards that, with the passage of time, have become mature and resourceful vineyards. Today it is vinified using mainly grapes from a single vineyard to the south of the winery. 100% Ruchè grapes, Il Cavaliere is made exclusively in steel and displays great harmony and balance, thanks also to a fascinating aromatic vein. Warm and intriguing, on the nose one can clearly discern hints of violets and roses, hay and vanilla. Warm and characterised by a long aromatic persistence, it does not disdain a few years of ageing in the cellar. Even 10 years and more. Goes well with richly aromatic cuisine. Excellent with game dishes, such as venison, wild boar and hare.
Cantine Sant'Agata was born in the golden years of industrialisation, when young couples left the countryside for a secure income near the big cities. Something that, fortunately, the parents of Franco Cavallero, the current owner of the company, did not do. Remaining in the small village of Scurzolengo, in the province of Asti, they continued to cultivate vines and then sell their wine. In the early 1990s, Franco and his brother Claudio became owners of the family farm, adopting the current name of Cantine Sant'Agata. The name refers to a votive pillar placed by a wealthy family in honour of Sant'Agata right in front of the winery. Today, the success of Sant'Agata wines in the world is linked above all to Ruchè, first planted by Franco's father years before anyone in the world demanded it.
