Weingut R&A Pfaffl
Grüner Veltliner is the main grape variety of Austria. Here in the foothills of the Alps, it is grown almost everywhere, coming to account for about a third of national production alone. A very distinctive grape variety, it has a delicate aromaticity and marked acidity. Because of its vegetal scents, which in some respects resemble those of Sauvignon, it is called a semi-aromatic grape variety. A 100 percent Veltliner, this white wine offered by Pfaffl is made from grapes from historic vineyards about 30 years old. Manual selection of the best clusters in late September, at the winery the grapes undergo cold pressing. After a period of rest in contact with the skins, we move on to the delicate phase of fermentation, carried out in large stainless steel tanks. At the end of processing, the wine is bottled for an aging phase lasting several months. Bright yellow in color, the nose surprises with a distinct black pepper note that accompanies more typical citrus and tangerine notes in particular. In the mouth, then, it reveals a medium body and again a delicate spiciness that is extremely pleasant. A super versatile wine ready for any challenge, this Grüner Veltliner goes well with fish appetizers, white meats, fresh cheeses and shellfish dishes.
Don't be intimidated by the hard-to-pronounce name, Pfaffl, or the not-so-common origin, at least for us Italians. For nearly 40 years, in fact, the Pfaffels have been considered among the most brilliant ambassadors of the Grüner Veltliner grape variety (also difficult to pronounce, but terribly pleasant to drink), but also of Riesling, Chardonnay, Zweigelt and St. Laurent in their country, Austria. The winery has a total of 110 hectares of vineyards, spread among 10 different villages in the southern Weinviertel area and Vienna. While this particular fragmentation makes vineyard management more complex, it also ensures a great diversity of soils and microclimates, which the Pfaffl people are able to express to perfection in their wines. An assortment that ranges from light and straightforward labels to concentrated and powerful wines, particularly with regard to the country's iconic grape variety, Grüner Veltliner, which is produced in numerous variants.
