The label of this Sant'Elena, like all those proposed by Teruzzi, takes up a curious image. In this case it is an imaginary animal that is the "magic summa" of other animals: a bird's beak, with rabbit ears and squirrel tail. A bizarre creature, fruit of the inventiveness and irony of medieval illuminators, designed to create astonishment and wonder in the reader of the 13th and 16th centuries. Just as this interesting white wine from the Tuscan tradition is capable of creating amazement today. Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, the grapes with which it is produced come exclusively from the 3 hectares of the Sant'Elena vineyard, in the Racciano area. We are at an altitude of about 350 metres above sea level. The particularity of this wine lies in the fact that, although it is a fresh and sincere white wine, it is released on the market about two years after the harvest, following a long period on its fine lees. Intense straw yellow, the nose is complex, with a wide and multifaceted aromatic range. Hints of white flowers and citrus fruits blend perfectly with the mineral and flint notes typical of the variety. The same complexity can be found on the palate. Enveloping and of good intensity, it combines fullness with a fresh vivacity and a long finish, with a pleasant almond note.
Teruzzi & Puthod, founded in 1974, is the most important company in the San Gimignano area of Tuscany. It was founded by Enrico Teruzzi, an engineer by profession but a winemaker by vocation, with the help of his wife Carmen Puthod. We find ourselves in the enchanting scenery of the Tuscan hills, in the shadow of the characteristic towers and the centuries-old history of San Gimignano. After all, the link with the territory and the enhancement of Vernaccia are the two cornerstones on which, for over half a century, the company's philosophy has been based. A winery that has always been at the forefront in the search for the most innovative solutions to produce the best wines, respecting the territory and the Tuscan winemaking tradition. Today the company can count on a total of 62 hectares of Vernaccia vineyards, boasting the largest extension dedicated to this renowned grape variety. Overall, however, Teruzzi covers an area of approximately 180 hectares, 96 of which are planted with vines. Spread over 4 macro plots, the Teruzzi properties are a guarantee of variety in terms of soils, altitudes, slopes and microclimates. A kaleidoscope of areas and sub-areas, plots and vineyards, capable of imprinting their mark on the wines, thanks also to the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In 2016 Teruzzi was acquired by Terra Moretti, the holding company of the Moretti family. Since then, the entire agronomic activity has been considerably modernised. No more chemical fertilisers, no more residual weeding, a 50% reduction in the use of pesticides and the redistribution in the vineyards, after a natural composting process, of the waste from the processing of marc and stalks. These, in short, are just some of the important changes made in the company. In order to continue to innovate, producing great wines and increasingly reducing its impact on the environment.
