The name Sotcastèl refers to the Sottocastello vineyard, which extends for less than one hectare in the commune of Teglio. We are at about 800 metres above sea level, an altitude that represents the limit of Valtellina viticulture. Alpi Retiche IGT, this white wine is made from pure Chardonnay grapes that ripen in a decidedly extreme environment. Here, thanks to a strong temperature range and low average temperatures, the almost total absence of humidity and a rather acidic soil, the Chardonnay expresses a great minerality and the freshness typical of the Alpine territory. The yield, as is normal in these parts, is decidedly limited and the grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of September. Alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with cold maceration for 24 hours. At the end of vinification, the wine matures partly in stainless steel and partly in oak tonneaux for 6 months. The result is a wine characterised by a beautiful, bright straw yellow colour, with aromas reminiscent of apple and grapefruit, but also mango and papaya. In the mouth, it is super fresh and has a nice flavour. Pleasantly long, it is the white wine that can be proposed to surprise a friend who still thinks of Valtellina only as a land of great reds.
The Valtellina, with its important red wines, is one of the most fascinating areas in Italy. Here, among the historic names, shines that of Sandro Fay, owner of a fine family winery, founded in 1973. The starting point is a small family wine production that over the years has gradually developed into one of the most interesting realities of the area. A strictly family-run business, since 1998 the fate of the winery has also been entrusted to the children, Marco and Elena, who continue their father's work by enhancing the Valgella sub-zone in particular, where almost all the winery's production is concentrated. Valgella, one of the five sub-zones of Valtellina Superiore DOCG, covers 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name derives from "Valgel", a dialect form to indicate the small streams that characterise the area. Here Sandro Fay manages vineyards for a total area of about 15 hectares.
