Seven Oaks is a wonderful vineyard in Paso Robles. We are in the heart of California, in the Central Valley region. This Cabernet, produced by J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is made from about 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, to which small percentages of other grape varieties, such as Petite Syrah, Petit Verdot and Merlot are added. Each grape variety, albeit in small percentages, brings a particular characteristic to the final blend, making the finished wine even richer and more complex. Fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, a 12-month maturation phase in American oak follows after racking. A good red already today, it has a discreet ageing potential. Properly stored in the cellar, in fact, it promises to evolve for at least another 5 or 6 years, acquiring greater pleasantness. Excellent as an all-meal wine, paired with savory first courses or meat main courses.
Jerry Lohr is not one to settle easily. Born and raised on a South Dakota farm, he has always remained deeply connected to an agricultural world. A keen observer of natural phenomena, in the late 1960s, he began an extensive survey of California's wine regions in search of the ideal place to bring his own vineyard to life. He thus arrived on the Central Coast, an area that, at the time, was not yet known to most. But for Jerry Lohr in that place the terroir was perfect to start his venture, and so it was that in the early 1970s, he planted the first grapes in the Arroyo Seco district of Monterey. Bet fully won, so much so that a few years later, in the 1980s, he decided to expand and focus on Cabernet Sauvignon in the Paso Robles region. Even then he was a pioneer. There is only one term to describe the visionary Jerry: innovator.
