BERSANO S.r.l. - Nizza Monferrato
If Nebbiolo represents the nobility of Piedmontese wine, Barbera, particularly Barbera d'Asti, is the everyday wine. The fresh and sincere one. Versatile and perfect for a thousand occasions. Bersano offers it here in a particularly fortunate version, obtained from grapes harvested when fully ripe in the estate's vineyards and delivered early to the cellar to be transformed. Vinified super easy in steel, this Barbera d'Asti DOCG is divided into two parts at the end of vinification. Approximately 50% is left to age in steel. The remaining part is instead placed in oak barrels for a slow maturation of about 6 months. At the end of this period, the two parts meet again, just before bottling and a further period of refinement in glass. This reveals a fresh and pleasant wine, characterised by a beautiful intense ruby red colour. On the palate it is firm and rich, with a pleasant and persistent finish that lingers for several minutes, leaving a lovely memory of fresh fruit and cocoa. A wine for the whole meal, it accompanies even elaborate first courses, red and white meat main courses and cheeses, both fresh and medium-aged.
More than a century has passed since the foundation of the Bersano company. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and sold its wines only regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. So over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
