Bodega Amalaya. 25 de Mayo S/N, divisadero, A4400 Cafayate, Salta, Argentina
Bodega Amalaya offers this Malbec Tinto, made from grapes from Finca San Isidro, located in Salta, Argentina. We are located in a magical place, about 1,600 meters above sea level. This Argentine red is made from a careful selection of 85 percent Malbec grapes, to which are added small percentages of Tannat (10 percent) and Petit Verdot (5 percent). Tannat, a grape variety native to southwestern France, is famous for its tannic structure and ability to produce full-bodied, long-lived wines. Petit Verdot, on the other hand, is a Bordeaux varietal that adds color, structure and complexity, with spicy and black fruit notes. All grapes come from the Las Mercedes Estate, which is characterized by sandy soils low in organic matter. The harvest is mechanical, and about 25% of the wine is aged in oak barrels. In the glass, the wine has a bright ruby color with purple edges. On the nose, there are strawberries, raspberries and ripe fruit, accompanied by a touch of pepper and spice, as well as elegant floral notes. In the mouth, flavors of red fruit, spices and vanilla notes emerge. The latter due to aging in French oak. The wine stands out for its freshness and soft tannins, with a lingering finish. To really put it at ease, this wine should be served with red meats, preferably grilled.
Bodega Amalaya was founded in 2010 in the heights of the Calchaqui Valley in the Salta region of Argentina by Larissa and Christoph Ehrbar, successors of wine pioneer Donald Hess. We find ourselves in a unique area with vines grown at high altitude. A complicated environment-but worth it. In fact, thanks to the intensity of the sun, the grapes develop a thicker skin, giving the wines intense color and concentrated, unique flavors. Much cooler nights, on the other hand, give the grapes natural acidity and longer ripening times so that the tannins are naturally refined. Red grapes also develop more antioxidants at high altitudes, making them healthier, too! The Calchaqui Valley, after all, is simply magical. Sun, mountains, desert, pure air and black, star-filled night skies. What more could you want?
