Bodega Amalaya was founded in 2010 in the heights of the Calchaqui Valley in the Salta region of Argentina by Larissa and Christoph Ehrbar, successors of wine pioneer Donald Hess. We find ourselves in a unique area with vines grown at high altitude. A complicated environment-but worth it. In fact, thanks to the intensity of the sun, the grapes develop a thicker skin, giving the wines intense color and concentrated, unique flavors. Much cooler nights, on the other hand, give the grapes natural acidity and longer ripening times so that the tannins are naturally refined. Red grapes also develop more antioxidants at high altitudes, making them healthier, too! The Calchaqui Valley, after all, is simply magical. Sun, mountains, desert, pure air and black, star-filled night skies. What more could you want?
