Conte Guicciardini, Via Fezzana 45 /49 – Montespertoli (FI)
We could call it 'the other Sangiovese'. The other because the Conti Guicciardini winery, a historic Florentine family, has always been known for the quality of its Chianti, Colli Fiorentini and Classico, both DOCG. Since 2015, however, the family has also extended its holdings to the Maremma, in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG area, where the main grape variety is the same but the character is completely different. In this case we are dealing with a Tuscan red wine with a young and lively character, made from Sangiovese and a few complementary grapes. Vinification in temperature-controlled vats and maceration for 14 days. This is followed by a slow maturation in vats lasting 6-8 months to soften the impetuous character of the noble Tuscan grape variety. Finally, after bottling, the wine rests for a few months in the cellar before being definitively put on the market. A ruby red of medium intensity, the first sensation when you approach the glass to the nose is that of a red dominated by vinous and fresh aromas. In the mouth, on the other hand, it reveals itself to be a full-bodied wine, with a perfect correspondence to what was previously perceived, and a pleasantly dry taste. Salumi and cheeses, Tuscan bruschette and legume soups are all perfect dishes to accompany this red wine 'made in Maremma'.
The Guicciardini, one of the oldest Florentine families, had a prominent position in the political, social and economic life of Florence since 1200. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Castello di Poppiano, a medieval building erected around the year 1000 as a fortress to defend Florence from the outside. An act of inheritance from 1199 confirms that it has belonged to the Guicciardini family for at least nine centuries. Today, the castle is one of the most important realities of the 'Chianti Colli Fiorentini' DOCG. The good soils, locally called 'alberese', clayey but rich in skeleton and well drained, are the precondition for obtaining fine wines. The vinification cellar is adjacent to the castle, while the maturation cellar, in oak barrels and barriques, is located in the basement, where the optimum temperature is maintained naturally. Since 2015, Castello di Poppiano has also been joined by another estate, Belvedere-Campòli, in Chianti Classico. Then there is Massi di Mandorlaia, located in Maremma, in this case within the MoreIlino di Scansano appellation.
