Today we are in the heart of Piedmont. But far from the Langhe. Coste della Sesia DOC Sandrin di Gaggiano, in fact, is an interesting wine from the area of Gattinara and Lozzolo, in the heart of the province of Vercelli. Here, unlike in the Langhe, the soils are mainly made up of sand and rocks of volcanic origin with a characteristic red-brown colour. These soils, rich in minerals, give the wines an unmistakable identity, characterised by a robust structure and aromatic complexity. Sandrin is made from pure Nebbiolo, an indigenous Piedmont variety known for its ability to produce wines of great elegance and longevity. This vine, in this specific terroir, expresses its potential to the full, thanks to the combination of an ideal microclimate and soil that enhances its organoleptic characteristics. In the cellar, we start with de-stemming-crushing, followed by fermentation in steel, during which several repassings are carried out to favour the extraction of the noble substances from the skins. Maceration lasts between 15 and 22 days, allowing the wine to acquire the right colour point, tannins and complex aromas typical of Nebbiolo. Malolactic fermentation, which takes place the following spring, contributes to making the wine softer and rounder, decreasing the acidity and accentuating the hints of ripe fruit. Sandrin has a beautiful intense ruby red colour, with notes of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by floral hints of violet and hints of sweet spices. In the mouth, it is robust but balanced, with soft tannins that envelop the palate without assaulting it. The freshness and liveliness of the Nebbiolo are well balanced by a solid structure and a long, lingering finish. Good already today, this wine has a remarkable ageing capacity of up to 15 years. Let's uncork it when we bring red meat first and second courses to the table. Excellent with a fillet of beef with green pepper, a braised beef in red wine or a risotto with porcini mushrooms.
Gaggiano is a fine winery that has its roots in the vine-covered hills of Upper Piedmont, where Nebbiolo reigns supreme. The winery's history is deeply linked to that of the Fabris family, made up of great passion, handed down from generation to generation. It began with grandfather Gervasio, a skilful winegrower who from an early age involved his grandchildren in the grape harvest, letting them press the grapes barefoot in the vats for fun. From these happy memories, combined with the value of family and the desire to honour grandfather Gervasio's legacy, the family's present-day commitment was born, with the ambitious goal of producing great red DOC wines, such as Gattinara DOCG, Bramaterra DOC, Lessona DOC and Coste della Sesia DOC.
